The label is usually a metal tag on the interior hinge side of the door, or a sticker on the top panel’s back face. If the tag is faded, measure the panel thickness: Therma-Tru impact doors are 2 inches thick for the residential line, versus 1-3/8 inches on non-impact models. The critical compatibility gotcha in Hollywood is the wind-load rating. Broward County requires garage doors to meet ASCE 7-16 standards for a 170 mph wind speed in most zones, but some older Hollywood homes west of I-95 were built under the 2001 code and may have 140 mph-rated doors. Signs Your Therma-Tru Impact Garage Door Is Failing

• The door hangs crooked or binds in the track. Usually a failed hinge or a roller with a seized bearing. In Hollywood’s salt air, the zinc plating on standard rollers lasts about 6-8 years before pitting starts. Once the bearing binds, the opener strains and the door torques out of square.
• Visible cracks or spiderwebbing in the impact layer. Therma-Tru impact doors use a laminated glass or polycarbonate inner layer. The crack may be inside the laminate, invisible until you sight down the panel at an angle. A compromised impact layer won’t stop wind-borne debris, and it voids the door’s wind-load certification.
• Rust streaks bleeding from the bottom of the door or along the track. The galvanized steel track and bottom fixture hardware corrode from the inside out in South Florida humidity. By the time you see rust on the outside, the wall thickness may be half what it was when installed.
• The opener reverses or stalls before the door is fully open. Often misdiagnosed as an opener problem. If the door is heavier due to water infiltration into the core, or if a spring has lost tension, the opener’s force sensor trips. We check door balance first; replacing the opener on an unbalanced door burns out the new unit in months.
• Daylight visible around the perimeter when the door is closed. The vinyl or rubber weatherseal compresses permanently after 5-7 years in Florida heat. Gaps mean the door won’t pass a blower-door test if you’re selling, and they let wind-driven rain into the track mechanism.

There are two things an owner can safely check without tools: whether the door is balanced (disconnect the opener and lift manually; it should stay at mid-height) and whether the photo eyes are aligned and clean.
