Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT’s door lineup breaks into three main families, and the installation approach differs for each. The Preferred series, sold more commonly in non-impact markets, uses a lighter aluminum frame with a different threshold profile. The Estate Collection, PGT’s thermally broken aluminum line, requires specialized compression anchors that don’t interchange with standard Winguard hardware.
To identify your unit, check the etched mark on the glass spacer or the sticker on the hinge jamb. The series code, frame depth, and glazing specification all need to match before we order. We carry OEM PGT hardware and select aftermarket equivalents where the spec meets or exceeds the original. For multipoint locks and hinge sets, we default to OEM. For weatherseal and sill caps, we often use a compatible aftermarket part that performs identically in South Florida’s UV exposure.
One compatibility gotcha: the Winguard 7410 sliding door and the 7420 look identical from the interior, but the 7420 uses a wider roller housing that won’t fit the 7410 track. We’ve measured both in Hollywood Hills kitchens where a previous installer guessed wrong.
Signs Your PGT Door Installation Is Failing
- The door drags or sticks seasonally. In Hollywood, summer humidity swells the sill track and compresses the weatherseal. If the roller carriage is worn or the threshold has settled, the sash binds against the frame. We check with a six-foot level on the sill first; if the reading is off more than 1/8 inch over the width, the installation has shifted.
- The multipoint lock won’t throw or retract smoothly. Salt air corrodes the internal cam and rod mechanism, especially on east-facing doors within a mile of the coast. - Visible gaps at the frame perimeter. This usually means the installation screws have backed out of the structural framing or the shim pack has compressed. In older Hollywood homes with cinder block construction, the tapcon anchors can work loose from thermal cycling. We re-anchor with stainless steel expansion bolts and reflash the exterior.
- Water intrusion at the sill after rain. The PGT sill pan and end dams are designed to drain to the exterior, but if the installation sealant has separated from the frame or the pan was never fully bedded, water pools inside. We document this with photos before we pull anything apart.
- Fogging between the glass lites. This is a glazing unit failure, not a frame problem, but the door usually needs to come out to replace the IGU properly. PGT’s warranty covers the glass for 10 years; we handle the paperwork and coordinate the replacement so the frame isn’t disturbed unnecessarily.

Lubricate the lock mechanism with a dry graphite spray, not WD-40, which attracts grit. These take ten minutes and solve maybe 15% of the calls we get.
Everything else goes wrong fast. A PGT multipoint lock has four to six locking points connected by a stainless steel rod; if you remove the cylinder without supporting the rod, it drops into the frame cavity and the door won’t secure. Impact-rated doors weigh 80 to 120 pounds per panel; removing one without proper support risks injury and frame damage. And if you disturb the installation flashing without resealing it correctly, water enters the wall assembly and the repair becomes structural.
